Description:

The purpose of this role is to create and lead an organization-wide volunteer engagement strategy designed to empower and equip staff to meaningfully engage Canadians in our work. The successful candidate will build program and organizational capacity, provide learning and mentorship to staff, and deepen committed leadership by empowering people in place.

You’ll build on the Foundation’s strong history of volunteerism, including recent successes, to deepen our culture of engagement. You’ll lead the evolution from a volunteer “program” to an integrated “people” strategy that grows community leadership of our mission, and increases our impact. You’ll work across regions and departments to champion the power of volunteerism and catalyse effective engagement. You’ll also model a progressive approach by recruiting and leading your own team of talented volunteers to deliver on various aspects of your role, and by leveraging the power of digital tools to engage the legions of people who want to make a difference by volunteering with us.

The ideal candidate is a positive team player who thrives on the challenge of working in a busy, deadline-driven and information-rich workplace. They are comfortable with ambiguity, and excels at building strong, collaborative relationships across departments and cross-functional teams. The role has a strong focus on strategy development, excellence in people engagement, coordination and process design, and an ability to articulate and measure how volunteer engagement is critical in achieving outcomes in our goal areas of environmental rights, biodiversity and climate solutions.

Responsibilities:

Strategy Development & Evaluation

With the Public Engagement Manager, develop and oversee an organization-wide volunteer strategy that advances our programmatic goals and builds organizational capacity;
Research, recommend and implement effective emerging trends in the field of volunteerism;
Identify appropriate evaluation approaches and key performance indicators, solicit feedback from staff and volunteers, and report bi-annually on activities and impact.

Staff Engagement

Implement the volunteer engagement vision and strategy, seek opportunities to ensure both staff and volunteers are aware of these principles and also working toward them;
Catalyze staff interest in volunteer engagement by sharing success stories, creating compelling training sessions and materials (including video), and excellent internal communications;
Collaborate with staff in departments and regions to identify opportunities for volunteer engagement; empower and enable staff by providing coaching, consultation and tangible support;
Support staff in the use of Salesforce, including designing and offering relevant training;
Provide regular progress updates and identify successes, issues and challenges to ensure effective and successful volunteer involvment.

Relationship & Data Management

Build a team of high performing volunteers that work with you to streamline and support all aspects of the volunteer cycle, including developing roles and posting position descriptions, screening and interviewing, orientation and training, stewardship, evaluation, and recognition;
Create and distribute toolkits and other digital resources that empower and equip hundreds of volunteer applicants to take self-directed action toward our key goals;
Ensure clean volunteer records in Salesforce, provide active volunteers with internal communications, new opportunities and appreciation;
Strategically support volunteer engagement in the regional offices, and play a proactive role in specific campaigns when appropriate;
Supervise and support Suzuki Speaks (event volunteers), including fielding requests, scheduling, acquiring new subscribers, developing support materials for booths, and ongoing evaluation;
Act as an internal resource and advocate for Suzuki Elders volunteers;
Support Public Information volunteers, serve as back up at our front desk.

Other related duties as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

To excel in the role of Volunteer Engagement Specialist, you will have:

Minimum three years of volunteer engagement, public engagement, human resources or other related experience;
Interest in and sound knowledge of leading edge volunteer engagement principles and practices;
Significant experience developing and executing successful volunteer engagement strategies (ideally both in person and digitally), with a portfolio and proven record of success;
Proven leadership and management capabilities, including the ability to motivate and develop people while setting high expectations and holding them accountable;
Strong project management experience, with the initiative to proactively develop and champion projects, chunk them into multiple discrete deliverables, and then delegate effectively;
An uncanny attention to detail and personal commitment to delivering work with excellence;
Ability to chunk work into discrete projects or activities and delegate effectively;
Strong technical skills, including Salesforce (or other CRMs) and online community facilitation;
Strong communication skills, experience in designing and facilitating training;
Well-honed problem solving skills, sound judgement and decision making skills;
Passionate, creative spirit with capacity to take risks and manage change, ability to work within and foster a team culture that supports innovation, experimentation and learning;
A positive team player who thrives in a busy environment, builds collaborative working relationships, and is highly functioning in a dynamic work setting;
A positive, “can-do” attitude that infuses the team with energy and impact;
Strong personal values that fit with DSF's mission and values, demonstrated through professional or community involvement;
Experience acting as a strategic partner, coach or consultant in a matrix organization an asset;
French language skills highly desired;
