Job Description / Duties

The successful candidate will recruit, orientate, train and support volunteers for participation in Saanich Police sponsored crime prevention programs, including the Ace Mascot Program and Community Safety Office This position also recruits, trains, and supervises the Summer Crime Prevention Students. The Volunteer Coordinator will have demonstrated experience as a volunteer and in developing and managing volunteer programs.

Requirements include a two-year diploma in Human Resource management, Project management, Volunteer program management, or other related field; Volunteer Management Certificate Program; three years direct experience in a similar position with particular training and experience in the recruitment, retention, training, maintenance and motivation of volunteers; and a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with a personal vehicle for work related use. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The successful candidate must pass/maintain the required enhanced reliability security clearance.

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (35 hours per week).

As a component of the selection process, testing will be conducted.

• Develops and implements plans, strategies and initiatives to engage volunteers and to enhance, deliver
and maintain crime prevention, Block Watch and volunteer programming.
• Recruits, orientates, trains, administers, supports, motivates and encourages volunteer participation in
Saanich Police sponsored crime prevention programs, including the Ace Mascot Program and
Community Safety Office.
• Recruits, orientates, trains, and supervises the Summer Crime Prevention Students (May – August), and
oversees their daily activities to ensure all events scheduled for the summer take place.
• Maintains communication and consultation with the Community Engagement Staff Sergeant regarding
the recruitment, retention and utilization of volunteers and program development and delivery.
• Plans and coordinates activities of volunteers and provides appropriate benefits and recognition.
• Promotes and brings awareness to volunteerism. Liaises with community groups such as S.C.A.N.
(Saanich Community Associations Network) on Block Watch and other crime prevention initiatives.
• Plans, organizes and delivers public events to promote Saanich Police crime prevention and volunteer
programming.
• Procures and liaises with corporate sponsors to appropriate continued or increased funding, including
funding from local service groups and organizations.
• Manages and maintains the Block Watch database to meet the needs of the program.
• Identifies, summarizes and disseminates appropriate crime information to neighbourhoods on a regular
and timely basis through email, database technology, voice mail, newspapers and other media.
• Sets realistic goals for the continued implementation and growth of Block Watch.
• Prepares reports and proposals as required for Patrol Division OIC, Office of the Chief Constable and
Police Board, and produces the Block Watch newsletter.
• Identifies budget requirements and assists in the development of the Section budget and monitors
expenditures.
• Maintains close working relationship with other agencies including local police agencies, and in particular
with Saanich Fire Department Emergency Preparedness Program staff, to ensure effective delivery of
their program through the Block Watch network.
• Builds and maintains positive relationships with volunteers and programs participants.
• Responds to enquiries from both external and internal customers under a variety of circumstances,
providing factual information.
• Composes effective correspondence and reports on routine matters with accurate use of business
English, spelling, grammar and punctuation, as per established methods.
• Applies relevant sections of required Federal, Provincial and Municipal statutes, regulations, bylaws, and
Departmental polies and procedures.
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality and security of information in all aspects of their work.
• Performs other related duties as required.
