Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides the cornerstone leadership for all aspects of financial performance, high-quality service delivery, research and program development, employee morale and service user satisfaction. The ED is expected to play a leading role in diversifying the charity’s revenue streams, building a strong and effective management team and proactively developing critical external stakeholder relationships. The ED is a visible leader and is also responsible for advising the Board and management team on all matters relative to Volunteer Toronto’s strategic issues and challenges.

The ideal candidate will have relevant education and a minimum of 10 years of experience at a senior management level, preferably in a non-profit environment, with accountability for financial targets, staff development, and strategic and operational planning. We are looking for a trusted and highly collaborative leader, adept at building partnerships and maintaining strong relationships with people at all levels. The ideal candidate will possess strong business acumen, a big picture view, tactical excellence, and proven success in leading and empowering staff through organizational change and growth. Previous experience reporting to, or working with, a Board of Directors is preferred.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Develops and executes revenue development strategy to create diversified income streams for the organization’s programs and core costs
• Leads the development of short term and long term strategies, goals and objectives for VT
• Works with senior staff to develop annual operational plans for board approval, including annual budget, cash flow forecast, program metrics, and measures of success that fulfill program and financial objectives
• Ensures the development and the maintenance of an environment that has a shared vision and encourages individual contribution to VT’s goals
• Directly supervises Director of Programs and Stakeholder Relations, Operations Manager, Non-Profit Engagement Coordinator and Accountant
• Acts as an ambassador for the organization by proactively seeking opportunities to raise Volunteer Toronto’s profile, presenting at conferences, and participating in media interviews
• Oversees recruitment, hiring, supervision and performance management of staff
• Prepares and coordinates monthly board meetings, including operational reports and financial statements
• Ensures the effective and efficient management of the organization and acts as final decision maker for all operations of VT including program performance, finances, human resources, IT, lease management, etc.
• Meets with funders to provide insight into VT’s work and priorities

Qualifications / Required Skills

Required Skills and Experience

Essential:
• University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., business, administration, marketing & communications)
• Superior relationship management, including staff, board and external stakeholders
• Strong background in fundraising and other forms of revenue development
• Comfortable providing and reviewing various financial statements
• Ability to manage a budget and not be limited by it
• Demonstrated ability to manage change and inspire others to activate a shared vision
• Deep non-profit sector knowledge, and leadership and/or management
• Must be an advocate for volunteerism, and an active volunteer, to be a credible ambassador
• Excellent and engaging written and spoken communication skills, including public speaking
• Ability to focus and prioritize, effectively manage self and competing priorities
• Awareness and focus on diversity and inclusion, within the organization and in stakeholder engagement
• Superior judgment and discretion
• Comfortable with technology and typical business applications
• Ability/willingness to work outside of normal office hours as required

Assets:
• Knowledge of accounting; non-profit accounting principles an asset
• Knowledge of HR law and best practices; organizational design an asset
