There are number of ways you can enhance your skills, increase your knowledge of current trends and network with others’ in the profession. Some of these include:

• Becoming a member of VMPC as well as provincial or local associations for Managers of Volunteer Resources.
• Obtaining the CVA certification offered through CCVA, an internationally recognized standard in the profession.
• Attending conferences offered annually by VMPC or local/provincial associations
• Taking courses or seminars in volunteer resources management which are often offered at local colleges, online and through professional associations.
• Reading books and publications on volunteering, volunteerism and volunteer management.
• Becoming actively involved by volunteering in the community or on a Board of directors.

The Positions Profiles tool can be used to clarify and define the level of responsibility of your position. You can also use the Skills, Knowledge and Abilities tool to help self assess and identify specific areas you want to develop further. 

The Position Profiles tool describes the typical job duties and lists common position titles for volunteer management professionals working at three levels of responsibility, such as the Director, Manager or Coordinator level. You can use this tool to identify your sphere of responsibility and which title would best correspond to your position.

The salary levels for Volunteer Management Professionals vary depending on a number of key factors which include sphere of responsibility, number of volunteers, budget, risk associated with the position and program complexity. VMPC has identified Salary Classification Considerations which can be used as a guide in advocating for a salary increase or developing new responsibilities that will increase your salary in the future. The salary ranges identified are intended as a guideline only, and should be adapted to reflect regional differences and current labour market conditions.
